The Andromeda Strain out on DVD

The Andromeda Strain - The Mini-Series

Blimey! That didn't take long.

It hasn't aired in the UK yet – no one's picked up the rights for one thing – and it only aired in the US over the Memorial Day weekend, yet The Andromeda Strain mini-series is already out on DVD in the UK.

I wonder what the thinking is there:

  • No one's going to acquire it so get the cash while there might be Internet buzz?
  • No one's going to acquire it so get the cash before there's Internet buzz?
  • Sci-fi fans will buy it immediately and then watch it on tele anyway?
  • If it gets sold on DVD a lot, the TV companies will acquire it?
  • Something else?

When you write so much about a Time Lord, verb tense becomes tricky.

Memorial Day Weekend has yet to come over here in the States, so I was shocked that it was on sale already, even before we've had a chance to see it.

Couldn't be a scam, right? Who's promoting the sale?

Oops. I thought it was this weekend, but then I saw reviews of the first episode appearing on Ain't It Cool so I figured I'd got it wrong. Plus I was in a hurry, so didn't bother to check (the story of my life).

It's not a scam. There have been TV ads for the DVD over here (by HMV); I also think it's been shown in Australia.

Maybe they're trying to do a BSG - the first season of that aired over here first because of the Sky One co-prod funding and so got huge good word of mouth before it appeared on Sci Fi in the US.

Fact checking - one of my flaws as well for Inner Toob, as you well know. LOL!

Well, I'm looking forward to it. If for nothing else than to get a televersion of the story and to compare it to the original film. What I liked best about the original was its unglamorous look at "hard" science, proving you don't need Raquel in a tight jump-suit to sell an exciting story. (Not that I remember complaining back then about that aspect of "Fantastic Voyage"!)

I have a feeling though that the mini-series probably has been prettied up a bit, and maybe there's more emphasis on action than science, but that's okay. Somebody got it right once anyway.

Too bad it seems that they're just burning it off though on a holiday weekend. I wonder if that should mean anything?

It's been running on Sky Movies for a week or two now and was available on Sky+ Anytime for a week or so beforehand. I think it was even claimed in the EPG as a "World Première".

Ah! That would explain it. Ta!

Although obviously "world premiere" would mean "everyone in the world except for Australia premiere". Which is ironic, given the ownership of Sky.
