What's the theme tune to House? A simple question, you might think, but it has two answers. In the US and Canada, it's Teardrop by Massive Attack (also available in the iTunes Music Store). Yet in the UK and Australia, to name but two overseas markets, the theme is an original piece, written by theme composers.
Why? I imagine licensing issues are the heart of the problem, but did Massive Attack refuse to license their music outside North America or did they simply ask for too much?
I'll try to find out...

So...? The world is on tenderhooks. Well I at least WOULD like to know why they are different.

"Due to rights and licensing issues this music is not used for the show in Australia, Great Britain, Portugal, Spain, Italy, New Zealand and Latin America which instead use a piece of music named 'House', now identified as Buddha Grass Soul (kpm 548), and composed by Scott Donaldson and Richard Nolan specifically for the show." It was changed for the second season.
Basically, for reasons unknown (Massive Attack being arsey; Fox not bothering to stump up the cash; a screw up in the contract; etc), they can't actually use Teardrop in markets other than the US and Fox isn't bothered enough to change that.

Thanks for taking the time to find this out. I've never known a series to have a different theme in the US than it does elsewhere (I'm sure it must have happen before, I'm just oblivious) It's a shame Fox/Massive Attack couldn't sort it out - Teardrop gives such an atmospheric track, much better than the alternative
